Berries

“Berries” on Hawaiʻi Island primarily refer to raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, and certain tropical-appropriate species. Small farms cultivate them in cooler upland zones or specialized greenhouse setups.

Berries

Berry production requires careful temperature control, as most traditional berries prefer cooler climates. Farmers in higher-elevation areas like Waimea or Volcano can succeed with select raspberry or blueberry cultivars, often using mulches and drip irrigation. Strawberries stand out as a local favorite, grown in raised beds or hydroponic systems for fresh farm-to-table sales. While overall acreage remains limited, local berries fetch high prices due to their rarity and popularity with visitors and food-service buyers. Short shelf life and delicate handling needs prompt many growers to sell directly at farmers’ markets, ensuring a premium.
