Kumquats
Kumquats are small citrus-like fruits eaten whole (skin and pulp together). A few farms and home orchards on Hawaiʻi Island produce them for novelty and direct sales.

Similar to other citrus, kumquat trees enjoy sun and tolerate mild dry spells. Their compact fruit offers a tangy-sweet taste, popular among bakers and home preservers making marmalade. Commercial orchard scale is small, owing to relatively lower mainstream awareness. However, kumquats sell well in farmers’ markets where consumers appreciate unique citrus offerings. Processing into candied slices and specialty garnishes further diversifies income streams for those who cultivate kumquats. As with niche citrus, pests and orchard care are the main constraints on expansion.
