Monkeypod

Monkeypod (Samanea saman) is a widespread ornamental shade tree on Hawaiʻi Island, recognized by its broad canopy. Although introduced, it has gained popularity for large trunk yields suitable for woodworking.

Monkeypod

Monkeypod wood boasts a warm, golden-brown hue with distinctive growth rings, making it attractive for tabletops, bowls, and carvings. Substantial trees can produce large slabs, valued in the local custom furniture market. While not always grown in formal plantations, many trees in parks or older estates are salvaged upon removal, creating a small but active niche for Monkeypod lumber. Hawaiʻi wood mills cater to woodworkers seeking large, stable boards, so whenever major trees come down, there’s interest in salvaging the logs for high-end pieces.
