Monterey cypress
Monterey cypress (Hesperocyparis macrocarpa) is native to the California coast but planted in cooler, windy regions of Hawaiʻi Island, such as upcountry ranches. It serves as a windbreak and decorative planting, though stands are not extensive.

The wood has moderate durability and a distinct, pleasant aroma when milled. Some ranchers occasionally harvest older windbreak stands for fencing, construction, or decorative timber. However, the scale remains small; no broad commercial market exists on the island. Those who process Monterey cypress appreciate its interesting grain and resistance to rot, making it suitable for outdoor use. Still, due to limited plantings, commercial harvest is sporadic, focusing on windbreak thinning or salvage logs.
